What is Multi-Modality Therapy? The concept is quite simple. The execution is where professional skill is overlaid with artistic intuition. I see almost all of my patients in a combination of individual, family, and group therapy modalities. The combination of these treatments provides the synergy to address the complex emotional and learning challenges that have prevented my patients from finding lasting change in their previous treatments. Patients who might shy away from family therapy sessions due to the pain of past conflicts may communicate in a group setting with their peers in a manner that is quantitatively and qualitatively unique. The group setting provides my patients with opportunities to understand how their peers have dealt with their own mental health issues and have coped with social and emotional stress. These models help plant the seeds for the "Metacognitive Mindset." What is Metacognition? Simply put, metacognition is the ability of an individual to look at themselves from a third person perspective and articulate who they are, how they think, how they learn, and in essence what makes them tick. I consider it to be the "Holy Grail" of executive functions in that many treatments will move along at a very slow pace until these metacognitive skills are developed and serve to facilitate the development of many other learning skills.
