Dr. Perna has worked as a consultant in conjunction with a variety of schools (Three separate high schools, and four elementary schools) throughout his career. Given the large number of cases that Dr. Perna treats who have learning challenges (over 90%) he is constantly communicating with educators in public and private school settings. He attends school meetings usually 2-3 times each week as he supports his patients’ academic teams.
Special Education Planning:
Dr. Perna has extensive experience writing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and is frequently able to help support his patients in mainstream academic settings. In working with school teams he helps the team develop goals that are
clearly defined and challenging, so as to minimize frustration on the part of the student or the academic team as a whole.
Special Education Legal
Dr. Perna is not an “educational advocate” in that he only provides educational consultation to patients who are currently in active treatment with him. He refers to other professionals (lawyers & educational consultants) who specialize in this area on a case by case basis.
Dr. Perna fully believes in and abides by the Federal Special Education Law when it comes to maintaining his patients in the least restrictive academic placements that are available
at a given time. However, in situations where a child/adolescent requires
additional supports he works closely with the family and the school team to identify which type of placement would be the most effective in addressing the
particular student’s academic concerns.
The IEP Process:
Dr. Perna is especially skilled in helping his patients address the following goals in an IEP:
Social Pragmatic Challenges Written Expression Challenges Organizational Challenges Prevocational Training Vocational Training
